The Nintendo developed e-reader is basically a hybrid between a GameShark and a Barcode scanner using an optical LED system to read code printed on cards.
These cards would unlock additional content, give you addon items or even run micro segments of games.

Remember the NES Zapper? Knowing that the NES (Famicom) is a completely different design in Japan it would only make sense that its Zapper was also very different.
The original Nintendo Light Gun was very similar to the light guns of the arcade machines, it even included a real working hammer so you could quick fire just like Marty in Back to the Future!
