While the NeoGeo X Gold is an officially licensed NeoGeo Product it was produced by a 3rd party manufacture with a dollar store reputation. Keeping that in mind I will note this is probably the highest quality product they have ever produced….but the bar was pretty low.

Capturing the nostalgic appearance of the classic system, the Neo Geo Gold X is a beautiful addition as a display piece to any collection.

Moving past the aesthetics, the systems problems were in its features and programming. For starters the manufacturers used a powerful 1ghz processor to compensate for an extremely clunky operating system designed for a much simpler device. In addition they put on a open source emulator that was not fully ported over and disabled most of the useful features of an emulator.

The Neo Geo is a arcade/home system that was born for multiplayer. Almost every game you can pick supported 2 or more players however the NeoGeo Gold X in its portable format is a single player only system, requiring the dock and purchasing an extra $50 controller to allow an additional player. Games with more than 2 player’s were ignored as well even though the native software supported it.

But wait there’s more….the NeoGeo X Gold when docked provided you with 2 connection types, the composite AV (yellow, red and white) and the more modern HDMI connection (the cable was even include). However the quality of the output over HDMI was visibly worse than the 30 year old AV connection and produced a frame delay that was noticeable to most gamers.

But wait there is still more….. Additional game packs were released in 4 volume packs or in 1 collectable MEGA Pack with all the games on a single chip. However the NeoGeo X Gold required a software update to run these cartridges. Inside the box you received a usb dongle with a switch and very non descriptive instructions. Updating the system was so difficult (and apparently impossible on some production models) that SNK open a lawsuit against the manufacture over the quality concerns.
