#agameaday The Last Atari… before the last Atari

The Atari Jaguar is essentially the last home video game console produced and released by the Atari Corporation. (3rd party developers are still making the Flashback models)

The system featured robust FMV abilities, a matrix keypad on each controller and would eventually lower it’s price to be extremely competitive.

However, it would feel like Atari of estimated what it’s brand is worth, expecting people to take a chance on this system when the market was already dominated by the Super Nintendo. To make matters worse Sony was already promoting the next evolution of video games with its PlayStation system.

One fun fact is that Atari was developing Both the Atari Jaguar at the same time as another system called the Atari Panther. The Panther was designed to compete with existing generation of systems, while the Jaguar was to be the next generation. Atari canceled the Panther claiming the Jaguar production was proceeding faster than expected.

The Atari Jaguar featured a difficult multi-chip system that proved to be challenging for software developers. Atari themselves only attempted to produce a few titles on the system. In all then system received less than 70 titles released in its 3 year lifespan.

Since then the Atari Jaguar has found its fandom with collector’s, receiving a lifer after death with the homebrew scene similar to the Sega Dreamcast.
