Vegas Stakes takes the mondaine casino genre and overhauls it in a way only Nintendo can. Simple additions done properly have a dramatic effect.
For example adding a story element to the mix… in Vegas Stakes you venture to Las Vegas with your friends to take a crack at the city. You have a hotel room and the ability to call friends to join you. As you progress you earn the ability to venture to more expensive casinos and place higher bets.
Another super boring part of a casino games is the doldrums of playing the casino games themselves. Sitting there betting over and over and over again. Vegas Stakes breathes fresh life into the genre by adding NPC’s and random events that do a great job of keeping the stale run at the slots interesting.
Vegas Stakes also added a robust multi player feature supporting coop plan and even allowing upto 4 players to deal into the game.
However the strongest addition may be the addition of an ending, upon winning 10 million or more dollars the game immediately cuts to a the “Congratulations” cut scene walking you through your success and in true Earthbound style stops to ask some personal about you. Giving you a text pad to enter in your life’s Dres only to have the screen fade out after the credits to proclaim that “You will…..ENTER FUNNY TEXT HERE”

All in all this is still a video game about playing at a virtual casino, but the attention to detail and the amount of work spent crafting a truly enjoyable user experience is something I long for in the majority of newer modern videogames. There is too much emphasis on pushing technical boundaries and not enough on user experience.
Oddly enough this is also one of the first SNES games Nintendo made available on the virtual console for the Wii and eventually Wii U.
